Outdoor Education Centre Location
The M.R.V. Outdoor Education Centre is located in the village of Ban Thaton, Chiang Mai Province, Northern Thailand. Ban Thaton, although rather remote, is actually ideally suited for the purpose.
Sited on the banks of a large river (the Maekok which flows into the Mekong), surrounded by mountains, with one of Thailand’s great national parks nearby, and with fascinating local geography, history and culture, are factors which allow us to offer a wide range of outdoor activities, academic field studies, as well as community project work in our local village schools.
Although Thais predominate, the immediate area is home to a great cultural mix comprising Shan, Chinese (both ex-Kuomintang and Jin Haw) as well as several hill tribe groups such as Lahu, Akha, Karen and Lisu.
Ban Thaton is best reached from Chiang Rai Airport (about 90 km to the east). The city of Chiang Mai is 175 km south, but the drive is through some very beautiful countryside.
We have about 30 schools which regularly send student groups here, ranging in number from 10 to 150, and in age from 8 to 18. They come from as far as the U.K., Australia and North America.
