The Maekok River Village Resort and Outdoor Education Centre began to develop links with the local community shortly after its opening in 2000. In the first few years, this revolved around the development of an organic farm which had as its central aim, the teaching of sustainable farming methods to local students, as well as providing them with English lessons and hotel training. On visiting local village schools, it became obvious that we could involve ourselves more extensively in the community through school improvement projects and help with teaching English. Since 2004, numerous projects have been undertaken in many local schools through the generosity and hard work of visiting schools.
Building projects for local schools programme. This programme offers opportunities for visiting student groups to come and carry out building projects in local schools. The project begins with the students raising funds in their own schools before arrival and then fully engaging in the building project while here, the projects include libraries, nurseries, canteens, medical rooms amongst other needs such as the renovation/painting of an existing building. The students also teach English and enjoy sports with the host school.
Many schools have carried out projects as part of the CAS programme at IB, whilst others have integrated it with the Award for Young People / Duke of Edinburgh Award. These groups will typically undertake 4 or 5 days of community service. Other schools opt to do a day's project as a part of their overall programme - enjoying a week of outdoor adventurous activities but also wishing to put something back into the community.
We receive requests throughout the year from local schools and then assess them as to the needs and benefits. We apply certain criteria to the project requests in an attempt to prioritize the numerous applications we receive in an attempt to be as fair as possible.
A list of projects with costs is available from us.
All funds pass through a separate community project account which the MRVR controls. Ordering of materials and payments for these, equipment and labour is from this account. Detailed accounts are thus kept of each project and are available for inspection.
Please have a look at our Construction Projects Annual Reports for more details on the projects.
